SuperThai

Superthai Appethaizing Cuisine

September 23, 2017
I must have walked past Superthai a few times without noticing the restaurant on the first floor, upstairs from Capitol Nasi Dagang and Softsrve Ice Cream Bar. I am pleased to find the interior spacious. The décor, though minimal, is cosy. The bare brick wall running along the upper half of the wall and cement bench on one side give it a rustic ambience.

Superthai is popular for its individual set meals, available for both lunch and dinner. Most come with an iced lemongrass drink and fresh fruit for dessert.
These are priced from RM10 (all prices nett). Noodles sets include BBQ Pork Neck Noodles, Tom Yum Noodles, Beef Noodles and Phad Thai while rice sets include Green Curry Chicken, Minced Pork Basil and BBQ Pork Belly Special.

Special Nasi SuperThai Rice Set for big appetites

If you’re particularly ravenous and feel like having variety, the Special Nasi SuperThai (RM20) comes with seven types of dishes: Tom yam soup, green curry chicken, seafood sauce, deepfried salt & pepper squid, mango salad, BBQ pork belly and crispy omelette with white rice and a drink. Two light eaters can share this satisfyingly. Just add an extra bowl of rice.

Thai braised Pork Leg Rice Set

Another serving with lots of protein is the Thai Pork Leg Rice Set (RM17) with a light herbal soup, hardboiled egg, braised tofu, tender braised pork leg, vegetables, pickled mustard, rice and a tangy chilli sauce.

Thai Steam Prawn With Glass Noodles

I love noodles, so I prefer the Thai Steam Prawn With Glass Noodles (RM18), served in a claypot with four big prawns. Steamed over the noodles, the juice from the prawn drips into the glass noodles, combining well with the fragrance of sesame oil.
For bigger groups, the a la carte menu has much to offer, from tom yum soup, salad, otak-otak and Thai fishcake to curries, grilled pork and vegetables.

Sweet and sour Pork Knuckle

Flame-grilled Pork Neck

I’m not fond of sweet and sour sauce but if you are, Pork Knuckle (RM55) has this clingy sauce cooked with capsicum and onions as well as the green garlic-coriander-chilli sauce.  It’s a huge portion, so plan to share. Flame-grilled pork neck (RM28) is served with a green garlic-coriander-chilli dip. I find the meat too lean though and prefer the flame-grilled pork belly, with layers of fat in between sizzled to a crisp.

Scrumptious Basil Leaf Minced Pork

One of my favourites is Basil Leaf Minced Pork (RM18). I just can’t get enough of the layers of aromas and tastes in this seemingly simple dish of minced pork stirfried with long beans, red chillies and basil. It’s a dish that demands reaching out for more rice.

Crispy Omelette

The Crispy Omelette (RM12) is polished off in a wink by the young ones at our table. Not surprising though. The omelette, stuffed with cabbage, is reflective of the chef’s skill at deepfrying. It’s airy and crispy on the outside, especially the edges and moist inside at the thicker parts. The vegetables too remain crisp, not wilted by the heat.

Squid stuffed with minced pork and prawn

Squid is a constant in Thai menus and Superthai offers Stuffed Squid (RM29). The 2 big squids are stuffed with a combination of minced pork and prawn and steamed in a tangy sauce scented with lots of garlic, shallots, chopped chilli and seafood sauce.

Tom Yum Seafood

To complete the experience, Tom Yum Seafood (RM27) is enough for 3-4 persons to share. It has prawns, fish, squid as well as mushroom. Not too pedas or sour. You can also order a single serve of tom yam soup at RM8.
The dishes go best with plain white rice although there are fried rice with crab meat, luncheon meat fried rice and pineapple fried rice on the menu.

Pineapple Fried Rice

The Pineapple Fried Rice (RM18) is served in a hollowed pineapple half and makes a complete individual meal as it has luncheon meat, deboned chicken, raisins and peanuts.

Sticky Rice With Mango

Red Ruby With Jackfruit

Dessert (RM10) is a choice of Coconut Ice Cream with jackfruit & red ruby, Mango Sticky Rice or Red Ruby & Jackfruit.
