WAGYU MORE @ The Gardens Mall

Give me More!

December 27, 2108

When My Best Friend tells me to meet up at Wagyu More for lunch, I think I’m in trouble.
Me: “You know I don’t eat beef, right?”
MBF: “Ya. So?”
Me: “Wagyu is beef in case it slipped your mind.”
MBF: “You eat the salad then. I want to go Wagyu More!”
That ends the conversation. Wagyu More it will be. No arguments.

When I get to Wagyu More, I am anxious to see the caricature of an angry red monster with horns. Then relief sets in when I peer inside and see a little yellow chicken and a blue pig in tuxedo on the wall. Maybe I won’t go hungry after all.

After we sit, we are asked to pick the soup base. With the yin-yang pots, we can have 2 varieties. Choices include kombu (seaweed, vegetarian), sukiyaki (sweet soya sauce) with egg, miso, tomato, pork bone, spicy pork bone, kimchi and Japanese curry. There’s also a soup of the month and for December, it’s cheesy pumpkin.
Our pick of Cheesy Pumpkin and Pork Bone Broth
Pork bone soup is the most popular and perfect for families with children. To add a pedas factor, just add chilli to your own sauce creation. I add chilli and scallions to creamy goma (sesame) dressing and it goes well with all ingredients.

The endless trays of vegetables, tofu and mushrooms
A quick glance at the menu and I know I’m not restricted to salad. Apart from Spanish Iberico (RM22.80++ per plate), there’s pork collar and loin, belly pork and chicken too. MBF is thrilled to see Japanese A5 Wagyu (RM88.80 per plate), Australian Wagyu, beef chuck and brisket. All meats are unlimited on the All-You-Can-Eat menu except for Iberico, Australian Wagyu and A5 Wagyu which are unlimited on the Premium Buffet menu.

A Seafood Platter (RM28.80++) comes with four pieces of prawns, scallops and mussels.
While the soup is heating up and we’ve ordered our choices of meat, MBF and I have fun picking our favourite vegetables and meatballs from the buffet tables. I grab oyster mushroom, eryngii, enoki and shimeji as well as tofu pok, fried fu chuk, bok coy, lettuce, watercress, yam and sweet corn.
Seafood is available if meat is not your thing
Meatball, fishball and even sausages
Some raw salad greens with dressing
Noodles and tofu
On one side, the shelves are filled with salad with dressing, meatball, sea urchin ball, chikuwa, fish ball, vegetable ball, tofu and udon. There’s cooked food too, including fried rice, sautéed mushroom, samosa and spring rolls, standing between the soft drinks and sauce ingredients.
Cooked food to nibble on while waiting for the soup to boil
The ingredients are very fresh and trays replenished quickly
Part of the fun of hot-pots is adding the ingredients to the soup and waiting for them to cook. Pork and beef are sliced thinly, so they cook fast. Ask for a raw egg so you can dip the meat in to add a creamy texture.
Easy does it, don't overcook the A5 Wagyu!
MBF is over the moon with the finely marbled Japanese A5 Wagyu beef and says it simply melts in the mouth with a texture that’s smooth and velvety and a good balance of fat and juiciness. A5 denotes “Excellent” in the grading system.
The pork is delicious too. Cut into slivers, it cooks easily. I prefer the marbled collar pork and belly pork though I’m told most women go for pork loin as it has the least fat.

When we are satiated, we sit back and think of dessert. The ice cream (vanilla, strawberry) with toppings is popular as is coffee/tea. Customers just help themselves. For dessert, there’s mango and grape pudding, mochi and cakes.

Wagyu More was started in Sha Tin, Hong Kong in 2014 and in September 2018, it opened in The Gardens Mall.
