Celebrating CNY at home
January 29, 2021
Lou hei with this takeaway yee sang
I enjoy being in the kitchen but on festive occasions, I’m more than happy sit back, relax and let someone else do the cooking. This year, however, plans to dine out have been thrown out the window, so we will duduk rumah diam diam.
Time to execute Plan B. For Chinese New Year’s Eve and CNY itself, we are having dinner delivered. It’s a good thing that there are many restaurants willing to deliver on these 2 days.
For New Year’s Day, we are considering the set menus from Dorsett Grand Subang’s The Emperor Chinese Restaurant. The main reason is it offers 2 set menu options for small groups of 4-6 diners and we definitely don’t have 10 to sit down to dinner. But there are also 8/9-course menus for bigger groups.
I won’t even have to cook rice as this is included in the sets which are priced at an affordable RM388 (all prices listed are nett) for 5 dishes. Our only problem is having to choose. Menu A has my favourite Sichuan hot and sour soup, deepfried crispy fish with Thai mango salad sauce, wokfried sea prawn with superior soya sauce, deepfried crispy chicken with lemon sauce and stirfried black fungus with seasonal vegetables.
Menu B offers sweet corn soup with minced chicken, oil poached grouper fish fillet with soya sauce, roasted crispy chicken with Thai mango salad sauce, wokfried sea prawn with crispy oat and stirfried seasonal vegetable with garlic. I’m not that keen on sweet corn, so I think Menu A it will be.
Stewed Dried Oyster with Black Mushroom, Black Moss and tofu
For those who want a-la-carte options to add a little glamour to their home meals, there are Braised Duck with Dried Oyster, Sea Moss and Assorted Dried Seafood (RM230), Wok-fried Sea Prawns with Superior Soya Sauce priced (RM63), Stewed dried oyster with black mushroom, black moss and tofu (RM108) and roasted crispy chicken (RM140/bird; RM76 for ½ bird). I am told there’s a 20% discount for these a la carte items.
Yee sang with Japanese-style crispy salmon skin
And I will definitely add a ½ portion of yee sang to my order. Topping choices are crispy fish skin, salmon, soft shell crab, Korean pear, jellyfish and fresh fruit.
