Japanese Food Fiesta @ Dorsett Grand Subang

Chef Shigeaki Ota believes in letting ingredients “speak” for themselves. He plays with mild seasonings to allow these to show off their delicate, natural flavours.

However, local palates weaned on hot sambal and salted fish who find the food a little bland, can dip it in soya sauce or add the fiery chilli flakes provided.

The chef from Agora Hotel in Osaka is at Dorsett Subang Grand for a short stint, from Sept 4 to 16 for its Japanese Food Fiesta at Café Aroma/Piano Lounge and Terazza Brasserie.

A Japanese corner at the Brasserie will feature various Osaka specialties as part of the buffet spread for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as bento boxes for lunch and dinner.

At Café Aroma, the bento box sets are also available as grilled items such as tori teriyaki (chicken), saba teriyaki (mackerel), sake hara shioyaki (salmon belly) and gyuniku teriyaki (beef).

There are five bento sets that come with side dishes of Japanese pickles, miso soup, boiled spinach, gelatinous sesame “tofu” topped with wasabi, chawanmushi and sorbet/ice cream for dessert.

Sashimi selections served on a bed of crushed ice

For the Sashimi Set (RM128 nett), Ota-san artfully arranges squid, sweet shrimp, squid and fish such as tuna, amberjack, salmon on a bed of ice. You also have steamed white rice and the side dishes.

Main item in Tempura Set and Sushi Set

The Sushi Set (RM78 nett) has more than just an assortment of sushi on a platter as you will also get simmered shrimp with vegetables and the side dishes.

For those who prefer hot food, tempura is fried to order. The Tempura Set (RM55 nett) comprises shrimps and vegetables deepfried to a golden crisp as well as side dishes.

Sizzling hot beef sukiyaki

There’s Beef Sukiyaki Set (RM88 nett) with beef sirloin simmered and served in a cast-iron pot, with cabbage, leek, mushroom, tofu and glass noodles. Side dishes included.

 Traditional Shokado Bento Set

If you have a hearty appetite, the traditional Shokado Bento (RM108 nett) has a bit of everything to chew on. There’s simmered shrimp with vegetables, sashimi, tamago (Japanese omelette), simmered sweet potato and taro (yam), saba (mackerel) teriyaki, tempura, grilled beef with miso and dessert. Instead of miso soup, the bento has clear soup with fishball and, in addition to side dishes, there’s also fried rice with shrimp.

Grilled Salmon Belly (front) and grilled saba (mackerel)
 Grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce
Delicious chicken karaage is moist and well marinated

Apart from bento sets, a la carte snacks are offered including the grilled fish, chicken and beef. There are also crispy, golden Tempura Prawns (RM38) and the deliciously tempting juicy Tori Karaage or deepfried chicken (RM28).

The Japanese Food Fiesta is also available at Dorsett Putrajaya (Sept 14-23), Dorsett Grand Kuala Lumpur (Sept 22-30) and Dorsett Grand Labuan (Sept 28-Oct 8).
